we love life in freedom

Stop the Law of the Jungle! Stop the Dublin Regulations!

Open Letter by Refugees from Italy: 27/03/2014

The constant fear of arrests and deportations is unbearable for us refugees. It often leads to moral and psychological collapses. What is happening to refugees in Germany and all over Europe can be described as psychological persecution and harassment. These measures are purposefully used against us to make our lives miserable. We think this is dangerous.

We are treated like commodities in a supermarket. They throw us from one place to the other inside the EU. Pregnant women are crying, men and children are crying! Where is the respect for human rights, human value and dignity? These proceedings should be a great scandal for the German government, but they should also be disappointing for the German people. They are a great shame for the democracy in this country and also for its police force.

We live in an endless state of emergency within the European countries, but we are not criminals. So why are policemen hunting us, sometimes at 4 o’clock in the morning like Satan? Why? Why would anyone terrorize people like that? Refugees are the powerless victims of the racist Dublin Regulations.

We don’t sleep at night. We lie awake with a hard feeling, with fears of repression. When will the “intelligent” policemen come to forcefully send us back to the irresponsible hell that is Italy? We demand that the EU and Germany immediately stop their psychological torture of defenseless refugees! Stop the psychological persecution! We don’t need any escalation. We are powerless and we are tired enough already, because we constantly have to jump from one place to another inside the EU. We are searching for peace, liberty and dignity. We hate the life of modern slavery in Italy. Our fear is the occurrence of a catastrophe, if the international community won’t pay attention to the situation of refugees in Italy and those awaiting their deportation back there. The people in Italy are living in the streets like rubbish! We are all victims of the satanic Dublin regulations!

It is noteworthy to ask what human rights defenders like Physicians for Human Rights are doing to improve this situation. What is happening inside the EU is an aggression against powerless refugees and violates their right to health. How can they tell us that there is health care in Italy when refugees have to sleep on the dirty streets like vagabonds in any kind of weather?

In December 2011, the European Court of Justice ruled that EU member states have an obligation to stop the transferal of asylum seekers to those countries within the EU, in which refugees face inhuman treatment in violation of Article 4 of the European Charter. The current Dublin System is therefore essentially insincere and impracticable, since it is based on the presumption that the rights of asylum seekers are observed in all member states. In the future, the EU and its members will have to ensure that they apply the Dublin Regulations in a manner that respects fundamental rights of refugees.

Italy is violating the basic rights of refugees and therefore the EU is violating Article 4 of its own charter by allowing the deportations of refugees from other member states back to this lawless country. The Dublin regulations also violate the Geneva Convention on the rights of refugees, which was implemented by the international community in 1951. We condemn these acts in the strongest terms.

We ask ourselves, where are those organizations that are meant to protect us? UNHCR, UNICEF and the World Health Organization – are they playing poker somewhere in a hidden place? We demand from them an investigation into the continuous racist marginalization of refugees within the European Union.

The organization Pro Asyl argues that there is an urgent need for new measures to protect refugees from Syria, especially those that don’t have relatives in Germany. Pro Asyl demands that there should be no deportations under the Dublin system for Syrians. This would mean that even those refugees that are already registered in other European countries, could still apply for asylum in Germany and stay here. We appreciate such statements and it is a good idea for Syrian refugees – but what about all the others? Why Syrian refugees only? Why discriminate? The Dublin system, which dictates that refugees can only apply for asylum in the country where they first entered the EU, is clearly violating the rights of everyone. We demand justice for all!

Both major parties in Germany have played a role in developing and sustaining the Dublin regime within the EU. The CDU as well as the SPD thus contribute to the marginalization of refugees and the systematic violation of their rights. We demand that they immediately change their positions and do everything in their power to stop deportations! We demand that they start to champion a substantial reform of the Dublin System with the objective to end discrimination and injustice everywhere.

I appreciate you finding the time and effort to put this content together.

I once again find myself personally spending a significant amount of time both reading and leaving comments.
But so what, it was still worth it!
